Steve Jobs passing brings Clarity to the Importance of our Health

With the Passing of Steve Jobs, the 110th richest man in the world, worth more than 8 billion dollars it makes me pause to think. A man with so much power, the world at his fingertips and he can't buy his himself a cancer free body.

The statement- "money can't buy everything." brings new meaning. Here was a man who literally had billions of dollars but loss his fight with cancer at the age of 56... leaving behind a wife and 4 children...

I honestly don't know much about Steve Jobs and this isn't supposed to be a tribute as if I knew him. His death is sad and his legacy will live on.... What I do think is this.

We need to change the way we think about our health. RIGHT? In my business the excuse I hear ISN'T, "I don't think I need that." The excuse I hear A LOT is, "I can't afford it." I understand that. Everyone's situation is different and I won't pretend to know your budget or circumstance. Let me throw this out there and then I'll leave you alone. (for now. ;) When it comes to your health... YOU CAN'T AFFORD NOT TOO!! There is a quote I heard once that has stuck with me. A man said, "people spend the beginning of their life sacrificing their health, working toward building wealth (or in most of our cases just a livable retirement), THEN we spend the second half of our life spending that wealth on our health!! When I heard that it just clicked... I see it a lot. People I know and love working LONG, labor intensive hours, for too little pay only to be broken down and exhausted at the end of a day. What do they have left for their families? their friends? themselves? a hobby? We know the answer, don't we. NOTHING... They spend the evening decompressing in front of the tv...mentally exhausted, just wanting to "unwind".

Here is the way of thinking I have come around to. I can't honestly say that I would have thought this way 2 years ago before starting Yoli. When I say Yoli has changed me I mean it in so many places in my life. I think that NOW is the time to INVEST in our HEALTH... NOW is the time to learn about what is out there that can make big differences in how we live out the end of our days. I see people in those motorized carts buying groceries and I think to myself.. I DO NOT want to be THAT GUY!! What can I do now to prevent that scenario in MY life?

I think we do pretty good as far as using moderation when we indulgence at our house. We don't drink, smoke, drink energy drinks, coffee, drugs, we cook at home the majority of the time, kids have a bedtime routine so they get enough rest (mostly for my sanity:), we are pretty active and try to teach our kids to be active and eat a variety of foods. I also know there is still more I can do for me and my family when it comes to our health.

I think one for me personally is getting better quality sleep. Maybe it's from the bible, maybe it's just an old proverb that says: "early to bed early to rise, make a man healthy, wealthy, and wise." right? SO HERE IT GOES: Most of you know that I am a late night junkie... a sort of insomniac (not that I couldn't sleep if I would just put myself to bed!! haha). When I was a teenager in high school I used to sleep on the couch by the fireplace downstairs because that's where all the fun was and I didn't want to miss anything. My mom threatened to sell my bed!! My room was the only one upstairs that I shared with my little sister. So this isn't a new thing but I am being told all the time, by my well meaning husband, that I need to go to bed earlier. I know he's right even though at the time I don't like admitting it. I am PUBLICLY saying, I WILL DO BETTER AT GOING TO SLEEP AT A DECENT TIME. There I said it.

I was thinking some sort of schedule where I get a cheat night where I get to just be up late and love it. This is the schedule I was thinking. 7 days in a week. 2 of them are mine to cheat and stay up late. The rest of the nights are subject to scheduled events. If there is nothing going on I will go bed the same time as Justin. I am (for now) picking Monday nights and Thursday nights as my late nights. K? Hold me too it!! If you see me on Facebook at 1am on a Wednesday I give you permission to shame me, call me out, and cry out in the name of better health, "GO TO BED!! YOU PROMISED!!" haha

I don't think a lack of sleep will be the death of me, HOWEVER I do think I will have increased happiness, patience and joy if I head to the counsel early to bed, early to rise.

The successful people in life don't necessarily do really hard things... they just do the little things that are EASY TO DO, and easy NOT TO DO... it's easy to go lay down at 11 but it's just as easy to sit up and write emails, play on facebook, or watch a sitcom until 2 am. it's easy to floss our teeth and easy not too.

So there you have people.

Invest now so you can save yourself money and heartache. or don't, and drive a motorized cart. :)

Thanks. this has been a fun one for me to write.
